Mercedes to auction SLR for charity

Rafay Ansar

Many car guys avoid department stores like the plague. But there's something worth checking out at Saks Fifth Avenue for the holiday season--a Mercedes McLaren SLR Roadster.

The automaker and the retailer are auctioning one of the last SLRs built for sale in the United States on Nov. 20 from 1 to 5 p.m. The starting bid is $529,500, and every dollar raised above that will go to the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.

In return, the buyer gets one of the final fruits of the Mercedes-McLaren hookup. The car has a hand-built supercharged V8 with 617 hp, a retractable roof and a top speed of 206 mph. It can hit 0 to 60 mph in 3.8 seconds.

Mercedes says the auction car will be the only one destined for the United States with the combination of a copper-colored exterior and light brown interior.

Bidding will take place at www.mbusa.com/SLRauction.
